Kasa Smart WiFi Light Switch – Installation Here is a fun 10-second TikTok Video that summarizes it (warning: it’s loud!): Īutomate Your Life is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to and other Amazon websites. I had some fun installing the Kasa Smart WiFi Light Switch that was after I got over the fact that I had just bought my first smart WiFi Light Switch and now I had to actually install it. I had some fears: Was this worth it? Am I going to destroy my electrical outlet? Will it actually work? Is it hard? Please note that Automate Your Life may receive proceeds from clicking on affiliate links. Let’s encourage you to do it yourself (DIY) with two points: 1) It’s worth it. 2) No, you most likely will not destroy your current light switch enclosure if you follow the instructions, and it will work. We have to do some checks first before showing you how to install the Kasa Smart Switch. You can get the Kasa Smart App from the Google Play Store. The Kasa Smart App will walk through all the steps. (2) Open up the App, (3) create a login, then return to the App to Add a Device. (4) touch the ‘plus’ symbol at the top of the screen. (8) If you have not installed the device already, press ‘Not Yet’ You will see a number of devices that you can install. WIFI – You need to make sure that you have sufficient WiFI. In my case, my light switch was behind a wall in a closet (specifically for the Christmas light plug). You should make sure that you 2.4 GHz WiFi has enough juice to connect. Check which circuit breaker needs to be turned off to make sure the circuit is dead with a load tester. Determine what type of switch you have: Check for the Kasa Smart Switch Wiring setup: You need to check if the light switch is a single-pole device and that it has a neutral wire.Voltage Tester, Get one at your hardware store for less than $20.Load tester, screwdriver, wire cutters, safety glasses. If you do not have one, Please it’s $15 – $30 to get something that will work. Single Pole means that the device is to control one device. It’s not a 3-way controller or it’s not controlled by another switch. Many houses have lights or devices controlled by a number of light switches. If there is more than one switch to control the circuit, STOP. The neutral wire is required for the device to provide current to and back through your circuit. If it’s not hooked up to your light switch, it might be tucked away in the back. You may not have a ground wire – it’s ok to not have a ground wire in this case. I did not have one, so this setup will continue without installing a ground wire. Now you will open up the switch with your trusty flathead tool or screwdriver.Įither way, the Kasa App walks you through the steps. Gently pull the switch out without disconnecting the wires. You will need to look where the wires are connected. Use your voltage detector to test the circuit (the wires connected to the light switch). There should be no confirmation of beeping or lighting from the load/voltage detector. This means the circuit is dead and should be safe to work on. Identify the Live and Load Wires: These wires are generally not labeled on the light switch box. You may have to look at the colors of the wires. One is usually Red, and one usually Black, Or just Black and White. Take off the decorative wall-plate from the Smart Switch.Īpply a label of Live or Load to each wire. The Kasa Smart App did not tell you to do this, but the decorative wall-plate in my box surrounding the Smart Switch was already attached. Pull off the wall plate gently so you don’t break off the clips. You will need the wall-plate after installing the Smart Switch in the enclosure. Disconnect wires from the old light switch then Connect the designated wires on the Kasa Smart Light Switch to the labeled wires. Use the provided wire caps and make sure the connections are solid. Give them a tug to make sure the caps have held the wires in place. Installing the Smart Switch: You will have to neatly fold the wires to ensure the Smart Switch can fit into the enclosure. This is probably the most tedious step which can take a few minutes. Line up the Smart Switch with the mounting holes.Use the provided screws to secure the Smart Switch to the lighting enclosure. The Smart Switch should now be fastened securely to the wall. Power On: Go back to the electrical panel, and turn on the circuit breaker.
